From Handicrafts to Online Success: The Story of Jesus and His Family’s Traditional Textile Business in Santa Catarina

Meet Jesus, a 21-year-old Mayan Kaqchikel from Guatemala. He comes from a large and hardworking family, with two sisters, two brothers, and several nephews. All of them are dedicated to the art of handcrafted textiles, a tradition passed down for generations in their culture.

Growing up, Jesus was surrounded by the craft of textiles, postcards, huipils, table runners, and scarfs making. From a very young age of five, he began selling his parents’ products in local markets, gaining an understanding of the business and learning how to be a salesman.

During the pandemic, the family’s livelihood was greatly affected, as the lack of tourists resulted in a drop in sales. But Jesus, determined not to let the family suffer, found a solution by selling their products online. Thanks to his determination and creativity, the family’s textiles finally found a market, and people around the world can now appreciate the intricate designs and attention to detail that goes into each piece of postcards, huipils, table runners, and scarfs.
